Why replace steel window frames with aluminium?

Steel window frames are beautiful, but they’re also costly, outdated, heavy and hard to repair. Aluminium windows capture the style of metal windows but with better quality-of-life improvements for the home.

Replacing traditional steel windows with new steel frames is expensive. Plus, steel windows are susceptible to rust and less energy efficient than aluminium windows.

The ultimate steel metal window replacement, our aluminium range is lightweight, durable, energy-efficient and boasts superior viewing angles. Slimline aluminium frames are a thin and mighty solution for homes, available in double-glazed and secondary-glazed options.

Ideal for older properties in dire need of renovation, our windows can be fully customised and cut to fit any shape, size or aesthetic.

Replacing steel window frames FAQs

For the best results, our team of in-house installation experts will remove your steel frame and replace it with a superior aluminium frame that is both thinner and stronger.

If your window cannot be removed due to planning permissions, we can install a secondary glazed aluminium window instead, granting the benefits of aluminium windows without affecting the current façade of your steel frames.

Aluminium windows can be replaced, repaired and recycled — but thanks to their increased durability — your windows can last up to 25 years longer than uPVC with the correct aluminium window maintenance.

In most cases, our in-house team will remove the existing steel frame entirely and fit a new slimline aluminium frame in its place, both thinner and stronger than the original.

Where planning permissions prevent the removal of the existing frame, we offer secondary glazing instead, preserving the original façade while still delivering the thermal and security benefits of modern aluminium windows.

Steel is highly thermally conductive, which means it transfers heat and cold readily — a significant drawback in older properties already prone to heat loss.

Traditional steel window frames were also rarely double-glazed, making them significantly less energy efficient. Our aluminium steel replacement windows are fitted with advanced double glazing and precision-engineered frames with thermal breaks, which dramatically reduce heat transfer. The result is a warmer home in winter, a cooler home in summer and a noticeable reduction in energy bills.

No — aluminium windows require much less maintenance than steel windows. Steel windows are susceptible to rust and corrosion, particularly in older properties, and require regular repainting and treatment to maintain their appearance and structural integrity.

Aluminium, by contrast, is naturally corrosion-resistant and requires very little upkeep — an occasional clean with mild soapy water is all that’s needed to keep frames looking their best.

With an expected lifespan of up to 25 years longer than uPVC and virtually no ongoing maintenance costs, aluminium is a practical long-term investment.

The cost of replacing steel windows with aluminium varies depending on the number of windows, their size, shape and specification, as well as any bespoke requirements, such as listed building compliance or shaped frames.

As all our windows are made to measure, we provide tailored quotations rather than off-the-shelf pricing. To get an accurate figure for your property, we recommend requesting a free quote — our team will take the time to understand your requirements and provide a no-obligation estimate.
