Aluminium Window Maintenance

Aluminium windows aren’t just popular because of their unrivalled style, customisability and thermal efficiency – they’re also a strong alternative to steel that require little maintenance.
Aluminium windows can last as long as 45 years with minimal upkeep, outperforming UPVC alternatives by 15 to 25 years.
To maintain this industry-leading lifespan, some minor, quick and easy maintenance of aluminium windows should be performed to keep them looking as good as the day they were installed.
Read on for the best aluminium window maintenance tips.
Maintenance for aluminium windows
Maintaining your aluminium windows is easy with the right know-how. To keep that beautiful aluminium finish, follow these maintenance tips:
Clean routinely: Our aluminium windows are corrosion-resistant, but you should still always use mild soapy water and a soft cloth to prevent corrosion. Clean every three–six months for the best results.
Aluminium window frame polish: While not crucial, specialised aluminium window polish will help to maintain shine and prevent oxidation. Always check your polish is suitable for your window’s finish. If unsure, get in touch, and we can help!
Apply the polish using a microfibre cloth, covering the frame in circular motions. Next, use a clean, dry cloth to buff the frame until it shines.
Lubricate moving parts: Apply a little lubricant in the window and door mechanisms (hinges, locks, moving parts) once a year. Use a small brush or utensil to get into the hinges of the window easily.
How do you care for aluminium windows?
Caring for aluminium windows is the same regardless of whether you have slimline aluminium windows, shaped aluminium windows, curved or sash windows.
To care for your windows, simply:
Don’t use harsh chemicals: Prevent scratching and damage to your windows by avoiding the use of abrasive cleaning agents or solvents.
Inspect as you go: Check handles, hinges and all ancillaries for any wear and tear every three–six months. You can do this while cleaning, polishing or performing any other maintenance task.
Remove dirt and debris from joints: Using a soft cloth and water, remember to clean the joints, hinges and internal tracks of the window. For those hard-to-reach nooks and crannies, you can use a toothbrush as a cleaning implement.
How to protect aluminium windows
These preventative measures will make sure your aluminium windows stand the test of time.
Protect the finish: By applying only a thin layer of wax or protective sealant to the frame, you can further prevent oxidation and maintain the aluminium window frame polish applied to the window.
Tape when working: If you’re doing any home maintenance or decorating, be sure to place protective tape on profiles and joints. Only remove the tape when the work has been completed.
How to repair scratched aluminium window frames
If you find your aluminium window has become scratched, don’t panic. Follow these four simple steps:
1. Clean the scratch: Begin by wiping down the scratched frame with a mild, soapy water, the same as you would when cleaning regularly.
2. Begin to buff: Once the frame is clean and dry, buff out the scratch using non-abrasive metal polish or an incredibly fine scouring pad. To do this, buff gently in the direction of the grain.
3. Touch up: If the scratch is deep, you may need to touch it up with paint that matches the same colour of your frame. Our aluminium windows are available in over 200 RAL colour options, so please contact us for the exact colour shade, and we will happily find it for you.
To paint, lightly sand the area, apply a primer, and then paint in thin layers. Wait for the frame to dry before applying a second layer.
4. Reapply your protective coating: Once your frames have fully dried, use wax polish or a clear sealant to reduce the likelihood of scratches in the future.
If you are worried about repairing a scratch yourself, please get in touch so we can assist further. All of our customers are offered a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee, which is registered with the Independent Warranty Association (IWA) for peace of mind.
Do aluminium windows rust?
No! Unlike old, traditional steel windows, replacement aluminium windows do not rust – one of the many advantages over steel and a leading reason as to why many decide to make the switch.
Additionally, The Heritage Window Company’s aluminium windows are corrosion-resistant, offering an extra layer of protection for peace of mind.
