Heritage buildings in Farnham
Farnham boasts one of the richest collections of historic housing stock in Surrey, with developments spanning from medieval timber-framed buildings right through to Edwardian arts and crafts homes and modern builds, too.
Many of the area’s original timber-framed homes have now been hidden behind brick façades, but the irregular rooflines, traditional courtyards and alleys snaking away from Farnham’s High Street are an indicator of the city’s past.
The Georgian age gave Farnham much of its current character, with designers during this period employing red brick with decorative stone detailing, sash windows, fanlights above front doors and formal proportioning.
Later, during the Victorian Era, we saw a wider range of housing styles come to fruition, such as terraced workers’ cottages, semi-detached family homes and even large detached villas – many of which took cues from the gothic revival style of design.
Today, central Farnham maintains a large conservation area, which was designated in the town’s centre from 1970, helping preserve the city’s heritage characteristics.
