Heritage buildings in Eastbourne and Hastings
Eastbourne’s unique heritage building stock lies in the fact that the bulk of the city today stems from a planned Victorian resort, rather than an ancient town that slowly expanded.
Victorian villas therefore make up the largest component of the city’s period buildings, with redbrick, decorative stone and elaborate porches very common.
However, in the Old Town, which dates back to the 12th century, you can find flint cottages, timber-framed buildings, Georgian houses and an enduring medieval street pattern.
Meanwhile, Hastings grew more organically over the course of nearly a thousand years, with a varied housing stock reflecting that fact. From weatherboard cottages and Georgian merchants’ houses to the grand stucco terraces of St. Leonards-on-Sea, the town has a strong mix of housing types and styles.
