The historic market town of Colchester is the UK’s oldest recorded town and was even for a time the capital of Roman Britain. With a rich and varied history, the Essex town has many notable medieval ruins, including the surviving gateway of the Benedictine abbey of St. John the Baptist and the ruins of the Augustinian priory of St. Botolph. Many of Colchester’s parish churches also date from this period.
Colchester Castle, which dates back to 1069, was ordered by William the Conqueror and is the town’s major landmark. Nowadays, Colchester has a thriving cultural identity, with numerous galleries, theatres and arts venues throughout the city, as well as a bustling town centre with plenty of restaurants and shopping opportunities. Colchester Zoo is also popular with visitors and is home to a number of rare and endangered species.
